Country Furniture went from Practicality to Fashion

When we think about country furniture, we envision a table in the living room of a farmhouse, or a chair set outside on the porch with fields stretching out before it as far as the eye can see. That’s what country furniture means to us, part of the simple, countryside lifestyle that differs so much from the hustle of the cities. However, is it right for us to generalize country furniture under such terms?

Diversity of Design in Country Furniture

Based on our understanding of what country furniture is, it should be reasonable to expect there to be a marked variety in the types of country furniture available. After all, considering the fact that country furniture is simply furniture made by a country craftsman, practically anything could end up being classified under its bracket. Of course, this is exactly true. Country furniture ranges through a variety of qualities, from the unpolished and somewhat crude furniture crafted by an amateur, to the smooth and well-crafted pieces of an expert. We could even possibly find some of the latter to be more intricately carved and designed for those with the money to purchase the highest standards of craftwork.
Not only does quality differ, but so too does the general style, largely based on location. Although American and English country furniture share a lot in common, this is mostly due to the fact that American country furniture was originally based on the English versions, however were adapted to suit the colonial needs of the time. Since then however, American country furniture has grown to be even more diverse, as it has become a melting pot of culture and derived influences from all over the world.

Country Furniture Today

Despite its origins, country furniture today on occasion is not even really the work of a country craftsman, but merely factory made furniture that uses a similar style. As far as we know, it was France that first took leaps and bounds as far as establishing country furniture as a style was concerned, and ever since then slowly but surely it has grown more widely accepted.
Naturally, the country furniture today is no longer as simplistic or naïve as that of yesteryears. Where carving was a rarity amongst the furniture, now it is practically a fixture andhas all but replaced the painted decorations that were the hallmark of country furniture at one time. In tandem with this growth there has come a demand for genuine antique country furniture, although mostly of the well-crafted variety that would have once graced the homes of the wealthy. Most of the collectors that we know seem to favor this particular type of furniture for the slightly quirky nature and character that it possesses.

All things taken into account, country furniture has come a long way from its humble origins, from being more practical pieces to being an actual fashionable style. Perhaps someday even the simplistic painted decorations of old will return to the fore as well, and we certainly would not be surprised if it does.
