Keep Stainless Steel Chairs Rust FreeHaving a few stainless steel chairs around it not altogether uncommon. Not only do they provide a slightly modern and clean look, but also they are mostly pretty lightweight and therefore aptly suited for furniture that may need moving around every so often. Adding to this, they’re normally pretty easy to maintain as they are pretty corrosion resistant and cansimply be washed down if dirty. Unfortunately, the main problem that we feel is faced by stainless steel chair owners is the fact that they are not rust proof. Prevention is better than Cure Instead of waiting until rust has already begun to gather at the joints, we recommend that constant maintenance and cleaning be performed instead. Don’t be daunted by the term ‘constant’ however, as maintaining and cleaning stainless steel chairs really is pretty simple and does not take too great a deal of time. By performing a task as simple as cleaning once a week with any regular cleaner and then rinsing off with fresh water, the chemicals that may have accumulated over time will be cleansed from the surface of your stainless steel chair. Although it is fairly corrosion resistant, constant accumulation of chemicals can slowly but surely eat through the protective layer that coats stainless steel, so clearing them off as often as possible is a definite help. By applying a layer of wax about once every half a year, a further protective coat is added to the stainless steel furniture, reducing the risk of damage greatly. While cleaning, watch for any discoloration that may already be occurring. Sometimes, such discolorations could simply be dirt; however it is also possible that they are some chemical accumulation or the beginnings of a rust spot. Especially in the case of a rust spot, we staunchly advise that you remove it quickly to prevent permanent damage. Dealing with RustAssuming that somehow rust has already started to form, it would be best to deal with it as quickly and efficiently as possible to avoid even more extensive damage. For mild cases of discoloration that could just be tarnish or water stains, a simple metal polish would suffice to remove it. Likewise, with rust that has just started to form but has not caused any pitting just yet, there are stronger cleaning agents that can non-intrusively deal with it. In the case of any existing heavy rust, there are also some products that can help. One which we found to be best to help remove even the heaviest of rust was the corrosion naval jelly. Once done, in order to remove the pitting caused by rust then it may be necessary to resort to mechanical polishing. However we do hope that none of your stainless steel chairs ever progress to a level of corrosion that would require that. Clearly, preventing rust from forming on stainless steel chairs is not too difficult, provided you simply clean regularly and prevent any rust from forming. Once formed, it can be a hassle to remove, and yet there are methods of recourse that may be entertained.
